Carpenter ants are polymorphic insects. This means they can have different sized ants throughout the colony. A carpenter ant can be anywhere from 1/8 to 1/2 inch long. They can be red and black or a solid black. The biggest is camponotus pennsyvanicus. This species of carpenter ants is all black and full grown can get to a inch long. The carpenter ant does not eat wood, they live in it. Carpenter ants will only remove enough wood to live in. That said as the colony grows so will their need for space. They will have a dumping ground near the colony this will be a pile of saw dust and ant body pieces. All ants produce swarmers, these are large ants with wings. They are both male and female. A swarmer needs to mate and get into a nesting site to start the process of developing a colony, if they do not they will die. Often a homeowner will get hundreds of swarmers at the same time. It is important that you keep a sample or clear picture so our entomologist can verify if you have ants or termites. Carpenter ants can bite if grabbed. It is best to keep small children away until we eliminate you carpenter ant problem.
