Carpenter ants are polymorphic insects. This means the different caste members are sized according to their job within the colony. A carpenter ant can be anywhere from 1/8 to 1/2 inch long. They can be red and black or a solid black. In Connecticut we mostly deal with camponotus pennsyvanicus. This species of carpenter ants is all black. The carpenter ant does not eat wood, they live in it. Carpenter ants will only remove enough wood to live in. That said as the colony grows so will their need for space. They will have a dumping ground near their colony this will be a pile of wood chips and dead ant body pieces. All ants produce swarmers, these are ants with wings. The body is larger then the ants you see walking around but with wings attached. They are both male and female. A swarmer needs to mate and get into the soil or wood to start the process of developing a colony. Often a homeowner will get hundreds of swarmers at the same time. It is important that you keep a sample or clear picture so our entomologist can verify if you have ants or termites.
